Our Work with Diverse Ethnic Communities
At Trauma Healing Together, we understand that the journey of healing can be especially challenging for individuals from ethnically diverse communities. Many face not only the lasting effects of trauma, but also isolation, language barriers, and the difficulties of adapting to a new life in Scotland.

That is why we created Stepping Stones for New Scots, a six-week wellbeing programme designed specifically for people who have recently arrived in Scotland. In 2025, the programme supported 53 New Scots, helping them improve their mental health, reduce anxiety, and rebuild their confidence and self-esteem.

Through this programme, participants received culturally sensitive, trauma/mental health support. Clients were given the opportunity to build resilience, improve their mental wellbeing, and connect with a community that truly understands their experiences. Every story of progress no matter how small represents hope, courage, and the powerful impact of compassionate support.

Building on this success, we are excited to launch a revamped 10-week wellbeing programme from 2026. To make the programme more accessible, it will now be open to a wider audience within ethnically diverse communities, ensuring that more individuals experiencing the effects of trauma can access culturally appropriate support.

To further enhance cultural sensitivity and accessibility, we will run two separate programmes for men and women, providing safe and supportive spaces where clients can feel comfortable, express themselves openly, and fully engage with the programme.

Over the course of the 10 weeks, clients will have the opportunity to explore and practise a range of coping strategies that support emotional regulation and wellbeing. Sessions will include calming and grounding exercises. Clients will also take part in hands-on therapeutic activities, trying various crafting techniques.

For many clients, these activities provide a rare opportunity to try things they may never have had access to before. Through these experiences, clients can build confidence, develop resilience, and gain a sense of achievement, all of which contribute positively to improving their mental health and overall well-being.

Our programmes are designed around the Atholl Approach, which is built on the principles of safety, stabilisation, meaning-making, and post-traumatic growth. This holistic approach supports individuals who are experiencing poor mental health as a result of psychological trauma, helping them move forward in a safe, supportive, and empowering way.
